Right I fixed this.
Looking at some of the files that didn't play, they all seemed to have AAC
audio.
I searched around a bit, and there was a few posts (from 2008-2010) with the
same sort of issues.
It was fairly out-dated discussion, but somehow they had exactly the same
symptoms.
Anyway, installing the Ubuntu package ubuntu-restricted-extras fixed it.
That's:
# sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
For the noobs.
I also did an dist-upgrade, although I'm fairly sure I did this just after
installation a few days ago.
Anyway, with the restricted-extras and dist-upgrade, it's all working well.
But I still don't know what was wrong.
cheers,
