You can probably run an openvpn server on your router. There are over 
500 distinct routers which can be upgraded with openwrt, and probably 
half of those will run an openvpn server. Once *inside* your lan, 
everything should be available with ssh. And on newer more powerful 
router hardware (anything 811n or 811ac basically, from what I see), you 
can have the router control aaccess to folder shares.

And the heavy duty pricing is soooo difficult to bear: free.

(On the gripping hand, you *will* have to learn some stuff. This is not 
a turn-key install-and-forget).
