As to the "what", there used to be some displays that
attempted to auto-rotate the image when one rotated
the screen (usually between landscape and portrait),
and perhaps there is some interaction there.  And if one
copied ones settings/configuration from some other
device/system, one may have copied something that
was not intended to be copied.
