Yes, a patch to mythbackend - specifically libmythupnp. Apologies if
this wasn't clear from my post.

It also works for me from other devices (such as a PS3).
I am not suggesting that MythTV is at fault here and I am aware of how
broken VLC UPnP is considered to be. However, I have been able to make
MythTV and VLC play together with this small patch to mythbackend and
given how frustrating I've found the issue I thought I'd post it here.
It might be considered an ugly fudge and the wrong place to make such a
fix, however I thought I'd share it in case my experimentation and
resolution is useful to someone else. If it's not, I've only wasted a
few minutes in crafting an email and the associated bandwidth/storage.
