[mythtv-users] 0 byte recordings with HD-PVR and Myth 0.28 on Ubuntu 14.04.2

My HD-PVR was working reliably (except for an occasional small encoding
glitch) for the last year or so until a few weeks ago, when I started
getting occasional and then consistent 0 byte recordings. I tried various
power cycling and rebooting combinations and finally it came up working
consistently for about a week. Then I got a new HD-PVR (in the hopes it
would fix the encding glitch), so I powered down the system and installed
it.
Since then I have had nothing but 0 byte recordings. With the old HD-PVR,
with the new one, in different USB ports, cycling power with HD-PVR on
first, then Myth box on first, etc. Always 0 byte recordings.
However "cat /dev/video0 > temp.ts" always works (if it's run before
MythBackend tries to record something. After Mythbackend tries and fails,
"cat /dev/video0 > temp.ts" starts producing zero byte recordings as well.
So it seems like the hardware and driver are OK until mythbackend tries to
use it.
Any suggestions for what to try next? Surprisingly nothing shows up in the
myth log files (except for commercial detection, preview image, metadata,
etc. failing). The first time mythbackend.log updates is when I kill the
recording 5 minutes after it starts, and there's nothing about the video
failing that I can see. Are there log files for dev/video1 somewhere?
Any help/suggestions appreciated!
