Your understanding is pretty good.

The only other variation would be to use an STB with HDMI output, and
another device which can convert HDMI to component before feeding that
into the HDPVR.

The Comcast way.  Generally, most channels on Comcast are "copy
freely" and can be recorded with a cable card tuner such as the HDHR
Prime or Ceton card.
