"Typically" (and every franchise is different, so the charges will
vary), the cost for a cable card is (around) $2/month.  If you also
return *all* of your STBs (if you have any) you get a savings of
(around) $10/mo.

I have found CableCARD activation to be fairly easy.  In
some cases you can do the activation online (no humans
needed).  Ceton has some instructions on their site
(including the phone numbers to call), but as they only
officially support Windows, the instructions are Windows
centric.  If you call the CableCARD activation lines it
usually just works.  Of course, usually is not always.
If you are one of the unlucky, things can go downhill
quickly, since there are so many moving parts.  Ceton
provides activation assistance if needed.
