It’s very variable, there are good scenes where the 3D is used subtly and effectively but mostly there are in yer face ooh look at the 3D scenes that are just annoying but the in yer face stuff seemed to be all audiences talked about in the early days so I guess we got what we asked for :-(

You do need a big screen, I found Gravity a little uninspiring on a friend’s 65” Plasma, he sits too far away but at home Gravity on a 3D DLP projector at ~110” looks pretty good, the 144hz refresh you get with DLP makes for a lot less flicker too.

That's necessary to stop you focussing on the wrong thing in 3D - I particularly noticed it in a scene in Star Trek when the young Kirk is having a dialog with someone at headquarters. I was trying to look at the all the screens behind them - but they were blurred out. In the old 2D films, the screens in the background were works of art in themselves.

That’s hardly an 3D thing, shallow depth of field has been used in cinematography for almost a century. In fact it’s over used recently by the DSLR shooting crowd, because they can. This is a common moan when people get HD at first, the why isn’t everything pin sharp comments.

The over the shoulder thing is annoying I agree.

That’s a serious problem, I recently discovered that they also grade the film differently for the 3D version, so that detail isn’t lost in shadows on home 3D screens. There aren’t even many films made in 3D, the majority are post converts, not too surprising that people get headaches from 3D.

I find this useful:
