The "over HDMI" part is mostly useless for MythTV's purposes.  You
can't use that with an STB, since the HDPVR2 doesn't support
encryption and nearly all cable STB's HDMI outputs are encrypted.

Why a driver for the PVR2 will be important is when the availability
of working 1212 units starts to decline as they age and they get
harder to find on eBay.

Also, for reference, while it can technically capture a 1080p stream,
it can only do so at up to 30Hz.  When fed a 1080p 60Hz signal, it
drops every other frame.
