It sounds like you already checked this, but I was having a similar problem when I had the painter set to qt.  From the wiki:

Make sure you are using OpenGL or Auto as painter

  *   MythFrontend -> Setup -> Appearance, make sure Painter is set to Auto or OpenGL (not Qt)

When you said using OpenGL for playback, I wasn't sure if you meant that you had set the painter to OpenGL or not.

Thanks Bill, Yes I have the painter set to Auto.

If I recall, vaapi didn’t activate while I had Qt set.
