thanks for that - that was one of my questions to MPerkins post; how to map between remote and mythtv function. obviously lirc had it's config file which i always used. ir-tables and MythTV keybinds it is and yes single application - i'll just be using this system for a dedicated FE.
looks straight forward to configure evdev IR; http://atterer.org/mythtv-xmbc-remote-control-without-lirc.
