It's a while since I've run Shepherd (we live in Australia, but spend
a lot of time in the Czech Republic, where I am now).

matching channel if possible and asks the user which guide data they
want for that channel.

Is that correct?

If so, I'd probably use a similar mechanism for the initial creation
of the script configuration file, but after that allow the user to
maintain it manually, or just re-use it.
