What's changed is the type of hardware typically used. Initially,
people used analog tv tuner cards (e.g. bt848) and later mpeg encoding
analog tv tuner cards (ivtv, etc.) which generally had cable/antenna +
s-video + composite inputs with the potential for different video on
each input. While there is still some use of these cards, they're no
longer typical. The source of video is generally digital and digital
devices typically only have one input. Changing the model now makes
sense because of these changes, coupled with the hindsight realization
that even when these cards were popular, almost no one simultaneously
configured more than one input.
