If you're looking for an affordable universal remote, I highly recommend the Sony RM-VLZ620:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=RMVLZ620&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=manuals#/manualsTab
It has codes for 1000s of devices, can learn from other remotes, can manage up to 8 devices and is cheap enough (less than $25) that it's easy on the pocketbook for everyone to have their own remote and to replace when the buttons wear out, although that hasn't been a problem yet. Also works well with the flirc. I've used one remote to train a flirc, then copied the same config to another flirc, which will respond to both the original remote as well as any other RM-VLZ620.

Regards,
Helen
