The cost of entry to some markets is high.  Just ask
SpaceX.  And while a PVR may not be rocket science
(although some of the MythTV devs may be :-),
implementing the required protected path, and obtaining
certification, is not something that is likely to be
accomplished if you only have a garage without a few
million in seed capital to spruce it up a bit.
