Thanks for your response, Hika. As to the DVD/BR, I've devoted some 
thought to that and have been planning to do without. I currently have a 
DVD drive in my Myth box and, truth be told, I almost never use it; I can 
think of maybe 4 times over the course of the years I've been using Myth 
that I've wanted to view a DVD, so having that capability is really not at 
all essential to me. As for BR, given what I've said about my indifference 
to HD video, that is an even more remote consideration. Some light viewing 
of broadcast television seems to meet my media-consumption needs pretty 
well.

Do you have other reasons why you think the system described (or something 
close to it) would be unsuitable as a FE/BE?
