I ran into this issue on Ubuntu 14.04.1 using the MythBuntu repos.  In
my case the config.xml file was missing the following line.

 <LocalHostName>my-unique-identifier-goes-here</LocalHostName>

Apparently mythlink.pl requires that line to function.
