My BE has an 8-core AMD FX-8150 which runs at 3.6 GHz.  I consider
that near the big fat end of the backend CPU spectrum and I find HLS
to be almost unusable.  Sure, if you want to just sit down and watch
from the beginning and don't do any seeking, it can do an inferior
transcode at real-time speeds with no buffering, but the quality is
noticeably poorer than an offline two pass transcode and any sort of
seeking is pretty much out of the question.
