>> 3) What's the best "oh crap that hardware just died on me what do I do now" proofing solution for MythTV at this point? My largest issue seems to be I run these MythTV boxes till they die and then am looking at the prospect of a $1000 Desktop to replace it since the hardware is SO out of date by that point.

In response to #3 above, I've recently built a new HTPC, running MythTV,
Kodi, and other apps, and believe you can assemble a very solid system
for well under $1000 - about half that number, and that includes a nice
chassis (from SilverStone), modern motherboard, 4 gig of RAM, processor
(I chose an i3 4330 with HD4600 graphics), aftermarket CPU fan (not sure
I needed this), energy efficient power supply, terabyte harddrive,
Blu-ray optical drive, dual tuner (HDHomerun), plus remote or keyboard.

Regarding tuners, the HDHomerun has been working perfectly. I looked
into a Hauppauge card but they have had not, may still have not,
released a Linux driver for their new card. Freeing up a card slot in
the chassis is nice, and the DLNA capability of the HDHomerun can be
handy too.

Good luck with your upgrade.
Jim
