Thanks for the examples, Richard.  I'll compare with what I have now.

I'm new to dnf and its confusing relationship with the yum legacy.  The 
graphical 'Yum-Extender - Powered by DNF' now shows  a repo called 
_home_john_rpmbuild_RPMS_ 'created by dnf config-manager from 
file::///home...', as well as an 'Automatic local repo. (manged by the 
"local" yum plugin).'  The config-manager repo at one time saw the 
packages but failed to do anything useful with them, or provide any info 
about what was happening, so I went to the command line with explicit 
file names and better things happened.

'manged by the "local" plugin' seems to me to be a neologism for 
'totally screwed up'. ;-) ... but perhaps I was looking in the wrong 
place... and I suppose this is really a fedora-lists topic, although 
fc22 is fading into the past there.
