Wild guess from left field: perhaps the bitmap fonts needed for the
menu got uninstalled somehow, and thus fontconfig or whatever might be
trying to do it, is finding a non-suitable substitute and attempting
its best to 'run with it' ?

Otherwise, I've not seen xterm die that way myself.. Granted, I've
used Konsole for the last 5 years now, since I found qt became as fast
as xlib (in my eyes) at generating console text scrolling as fast as
the screen can refresh.
