What version would you recommend (and I wonder why MythBuntu is on an old
version)?)

> I presume the logs are empty,

Yes, I can't find anything in the logs other than what's in /var/log/syslog:

Dec 9 09:25:17 mfe1 lircd-0.9.0[2275]: caught signal
Dec 9 09:25:17 mfe1 lircd-0.9.0[2446]: lircd(devinput) ready, using
/run/lirc/lircd
Dec 9 09:25:26 mfe1 console-kit-daemon[1967]: GLib-CRITICAL: Source ID 27
was not found when attempting to remove it
Dec 9 09:26:08 mfe1 lircd-0.9.0[2446]: accepted new client on
/run/lirc/lircd
Dec 9 09:26:08 mfe1 lircd-0.9.0[2446]: initializing '/dev/input/event8'
Dec 9 09:28:15 mfe1 lircd-0.9.0[2446]: removed client
Dec 9 09:28:15 mfe1 lircd-0.9.0[2446]: closing '/dev/input/event8'

> and that ir-keytable -t still reports /dev/input/event8 (?)

Yes, it's still reporting /dev/input/event8:

$ sudo ir-keytable
Found /sys/class/rc/rc0/ (/dev/input/event8) with:
        Driver mceusb, table rc-rc6-mce
Supported protocols: NEC RC-5 RC-6 JVC SONY SANYO LIRC other
Enabled protocols: NEC RC-5 RC-6 JVC SONY SANYO LIRC other
Name: Media Center Ed. eHome Infrared
        bus: 3, vendor/product: 1934:5168, version: 0x0001
Repeat delay = 500 ms, repeat period = 125 ms

Bummer! If you're lost then I certainly am. I've always hated lirc with a
passion and this just backs that up. Any suggestions as to where I turn
from here? My only last hope is that Stephen Worthington comes through with
something. If that all fails it looks like I'm going to have to go back to
MythBuntu 12.04 and be stuck on that for ever.
