I use: sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend.service (and start.) With
entries in /etc/sudoers.d/mythtv like these:

...
     /bin/systemctl start mythtv-backend.service,   \
     /bin/systemctl stop mythtv-backend.service,    \
...
