I started with a similar device (without battery) with OpenWRT and Kodi
on the tablets, but didnt like the Kodi interface on the tablets - to
difficult for the young kids and openwrt doesn't include the full
libraries for minidlna (and the little router crashed with more than 6
media files in the library). Using the RaspberryPi opened up more
things I can do with it - plan to add another wifi adapter to link to a
wifi ODBII interface and another tablet for the driver for Navigation
and Vehicle stats. The plan is to log fuel consumption/speed etc with
munin as well.
I have added a battery (plus charger circuit) to the setup for pit stops
as well.
I have recently seen a portable streaming server marketed for this exact
purpose, but havent been able to find the link again.
