I built a media server for the family van using a Raspberry PI with a 
Wifi adapter, GPRS Modem and USB Memory sticks.  The Pi is running a 
stripped down Debian image (server image - no gui) and MiniDLNA Server.
We use cheap android tablets running BubblePNP and BSPlayer for the 
clients.
