I've two frontends that are about 95% equal, so I cloned the one from
the other. One of the few differences is lirc. The one has a self made
serial-ir, so not kernel supported and the other a PVR350 with the
in-kernel lirc_i2c module. Since I use lircd on both the only real
difference is what I described before. With the in-kernel module you
can choose not to use lirc, but not with a blaster. And you can choose
to not use the in-kernel key mappings. They are only mandatory if you
don't use lircd.
So in essence I think you should be able to use your old
configuration with your mappings defined in lircd.conf. You then
however should block the default mappings coming through the input
layer and only use the ones coming through lird.
