Wow, that was a confusing typo! I should have said ..
"The USB tuner is *NOW* showing up in the backend setup, but I can't get
it to find any channels."
It's now showing up fine in the backend setup, I just can't get it to
find any channels.

Thanks John,
I was hoping that everything would 'just work' after I'd updated the
kernel. I'll take a look at the links you mentioned when I get back to
the machine.
I've also noticed that the tuner's light isn't on. It lights up when you
first plug it in, or when the system turns on, but then turns off. I
seem to remember that the light was on all of the time with the older
firmware, but that may be a false memory?
