[mythtv-users] H265 support

I had a feeling I'd get some flack about my comment. :)
I get torn between using the latest and greatest and something that is
proven stable. It seems like many tech people like to use the latest and
greatest and government and industry likes to use things that have been
tried and true for many many years.
I was saying that I wasn't thinking that industry will move to h265 because
it's very new. Also, many of us on here have cheap boxes that use
mythfrontend. Many of the nvidia boards will decode h264 just fine, but if
you want to do h265, you're going to have to upgrade. I think back and
remember how much of a challenge and joy it was to get VDPAU to hardware
decode mpeg2 and h264, and I feel like we're all in a good spot for that.
Moving to h.265, I think, it's not going to gain much momentum. Just my
opinion....
Now I will say that because of all my thoughts, I haven't investigated h265
very much at all, and it's probably mostly because my hardware won't be
able to decode it. If h265 offers better quality at lower file sizes, I
might look into it more. Even still, I think it will take years for h265
to catch on because h264 is so widely used and supported in hardware in so
many devices.
In saying all this, I still think that myth (and others) should build h265
into their system, but I just don't see it being widely used for years to
come.
