This is actually what I do on my current system. I have a six-disk RAID 
6 array for recordings, but use two 2.5" drives for the OS and OS 
backups. The boot partition and OS are contained on one of the two 
drives. The remaining space is RAID 1 mirrored to the entire second 2.5" 
drive. For backups, I set up a compressed ZFS image on the RAID 1 device 
and use rsync. MythTV database backups are also saved (outside of ZFS) 
nightly using mysqlhotcopy.
