USB driver bugs come and go. I have experienced
interesting breakage (and then fixage) many times
for some less common devices. There are far too
many variants of chips and firmware out there to
test all combinations in advance. Linux depends
on the greater community to test before release,
and to submit bug reports (even better, patches
for the bugs), or to go bug the manufacturer if they
claim to support Linux. And while submitting useful
bug reports can sometimes require one being willing
and able to run debugging codes or custom
kernel/drivers, even a report of controller <x> fails
with device <y> is sometimes better than nothing
(although it may be triaged into a CNR), at least
others will know to avoid the combination.

I do agree that the ROI suggests that it is often
better to switch than fight (no matter what the
Tareyton commercials said). On the other hand,
it is assertable that Linux desktop users are more
obstinate than most, insisting that they are going
to make it work, no matter what the cost.
