Right now you can get it to work without systemd, though the Gentoo
devs don't support this, mainly because it isn't likely to work in the
long-term anyway. I think Funtoo (a Gentoo derivative by the Gentoo
founder) has a systemd-less Gnome3.
However, if you really want to go Gnome 3 you might as well just go
with systemd. If not, then you might as well migrate to something
else. You can push back the inevitable for a while longer, but sooner
or later the two aren't going to be separable.
Older versions of Gnome 3 do not require systemd, so I'm sure there
are non-systemd distros that have older versions of Gnome 3.
