Depends.
If it's a "clean" read with no errors then it does the job. If I'm trying to clone or image a drive (usually hard drives I'm trying to recover stuff off) that has errors or bad blocks then I'll use ddrescue - which will skip & retry bad blocks rather than just aborting at the first sign of trouble.
