For a point of reference, I installed xbmc.  Video playback is excellent 
with xbmc.  Same driver, same xorg.conf, etc.  This looks more like a 
MythTV configuration issue.
It is actually nvidia-settings that crashes, not nvidia-xconfig (my poor 
memory).
