I found on my box 14.0.4 problematic as well (nViIDIA 9400 integrated graphics, with similar lockups preceded by video corruption. Installing with nomodeset as a boot param seems to help, but there were other issues which made me decide to leave my mostly running 12.0.4 as is (mostly = LIRC issues with a DVICO Fusion remote, lodged as a bug with ubuntu since 11.0.x)
