Note that for simple values, every VPU that can do
hardware decoding of H.264 can also do hardware
decoding of MPEG2. The PowerVR chip in the
Nexus Player is no exception. However, MPEG2
decoding has to be licensed, and software enabled.
For the ADT-1, Google apparently did both (at least
based on the contents of the media codecs list). Asus,
apparently, did not do so (at least for now). Whether
hardware MPEG2 decoding is coming in some future
release is not known. I would never advise anyone
to purchase a device hoping for future enhancements.
You would likely be disappointed.
