Agreed--and if you use a format like 
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/MythVideo_File_Parsing

You could even use mythfrontend's Video Library with complete metadata.

Right, but if you want to stick with a UI you know, you can always 
create an "offline" MythTV system (completely separate from your main 
system and--at least while we still require tuners for backends--using a 
demo tuner) so you can run mythfrontend and use Video Library.  There's 
really no benefit to putting the recordings in "Watch Recordings" on the 
offline system.
