Is it throwing any errors when trying to restore? The restore utility
just calls the mythtv database scripts, so you should be able to
restore the DB backup file using
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Database_Backup_and_Restore

And yes, you should always check your backups. And once you've checked
them, check them again.
