It is only clumsy if you make bad choices concerning rack depth, PDUs or
the mounting of them.  On these beasts, you are probably going to need to
slide the server out a few inches to get at the left most and right most
columns of drives.

That doesn't look any less clumsy if you expect to keep the box online
during drive replacements.  Now you need to assure proper cable management
for the 30" of service slack you'll need once every other quarter to
replace a drive.
