At this stage of the fork, MySQL and MariaDB are pretty
much identical in functionality, and config files, and
command line invokation (and even binary files for the
engines they share in common) for a well behaved,
reasonably simple, app such as MythTV. Both vendors
have suggested future versions may introduce
features/functions/enhancements that break that existing
compatibility. Even today, there are some (and not helpful
to a dedicated MythTV DB server) fixes/enhancements
that if one is running an enterprise, or multiple apps in their
DB server, that would influence your decision as to which
is better.
