I think this is expected behavoiur under Unix. When a file is created, it is 
obviously zero bytes befoe anything is written to it. After that, the file size 
will only increase when buffers are written to disk.

If you have a reasonable myth system the data will be kept buffered in memory 
for a long while, and maybe only written to disk when the file is closed, giving 
you the effect you see.
