I would strongly recommend you *not* try to use the HD-PVR with
standard definition video from a VCR.  The encoder can get very
confused by poor sync timing (common with VCRs), and you're likely to
have corrupted recordings.

I can see why people would recommend the HDPVR for this sort of thing
- it *seems* like a good choice, unless you've actually tried it
and/or understand the particulars of the hardware design.
