As with all else, it depends.
You really can do it all with just one port,
sometimes called a router on a stick, or
a one armed router. But that configuration
does limit your peak aggregate performance.
And, as managed switches tend to cost
more than an additional Ethernet port,
there is a tendency to avoid that approach
in the consumer space.
