If you changed a network card (new MAC address) Debian/Ubuntu will save the
old MAC and in the middle of the boot switch the new card from eth0 to eth1
breaking the in progress network config.  Check in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules if this seems like the issue.
