For what it is worth, I now believe the problem to be in the RTC on the
linux-sunxi kernel for the A10 chip.

I have found a "modern day" driver for that same chip that was introduced
into the mainline kernel for the cubieboard in Oct of 2013.  I am attempting
to backport it to the 3.4.86ish kernel that I am running on the hackberry
and mk802 to see if it makes a difference.

I will report back when I have more info.
