Performance wise you'll have no trouble. Stability wise it depends on the version of the drivers, in particular the vaapi part. I run debian stable on a ivy bridge i7 and the drivers that come with it gave me constant heap corruption crashes so I switched to software decoding and intel's opengl displaying frames and that runs much better. I've read posts on this list from people using recent drivers, like the ones at 01.org, and they have much better luck so that's probably the important factor.

After that if you still have trouble an i3 is more than fast enough to software decode SD video.
