[mythtv-users] Frustrating HDMI Issue

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.
I think my issue is some kind of HDMI sync issue between my Linux box and my Denon AVR-1913, but I don't have the knowledge to prove it or fix it.
My setup is an AMD HD 6450 with the DVI output going to my LG HDTV and the HDMI output going to the Denon receiver, which is then connected by HDMI to the same TV. On the DVI output, everything works swimmingly, but there's obviously no audio over the DVI to HDMI connection. I had a GeForce GT210 previously, and I had these exact same symptoms.
The receiver just refuses to go into digital mode, accepting no commands from the HTPC. But xrandr reports a list of valid modes, with 1920x1080 at 60 Hz being selected, and it says it's connected properly. There is no output on the TV, however, except for a Denon splash screen. So I tried bypassing the receiver altogether and going straight to the TV. This worked, but the TV did not detect a valid signal, I guess. The input was gray. I selected it anyway, and I got my Mythfrontend.
So I guess the problem is between the receiver and the PC, probably the PC. How do I fix it, and what info could I give to help determine what's wrong? It looks like some kind of handshake issue with HDMI, but I don't know what tools to use to prove it.
I'm running Xorg Server 1.14.5 and kernel 3.13.6 with Radeon driver 7.3.0.
Thanks for any help.
