OK, made a 512M tmpfs just for MySQL - it's made a "significant" difference :) Reschedules down from typically 10+ seconds with periods of heavy WIO to around 2-5 seconds.
But interestingly, I don't actually see any evidence of MySQL making any temporary files during reschedules. Could be that I'm not looking in the right place at just the right time. Had "lsof +L1 -a -u mysql -r 1" running, and none of the handful of tables showing increased from 0 size.

SSDs are on their way, be interesting to see what the combination brings.
