There's no need to press the scan button in 0.26 and later anymore.

The list is automatically refreshed when you get into that screen.

The scan button is more useful for when you enter a custom config and want
to check that the device and options are valid.
Or if you need to refresh the entry like after inserting a USB audio card

Anything more than Nvidia 1.0.25 should be fine.
There's been a bug in kernel 3.7 and 3.8 that broke spdif if you also had
hdmi
