I have been aware of recommendations to disable mheg but have only just 
rediscovered the frontend switch to do that.  With it disabled both 
commands exit cleanly, at least for SD recordings.  Haven't tried HD.

Frontend Setup > Video > Playback OSD > untick 'Enable interactive TV'
