In my part of the world, there are plenty of people who are on 10 or
20 Gibyte per month caps, so more than 1 Gibyte of data being used
unexpectedly would be a real problem to them.  Let alone those who
used to be on 1 Gibyte caps like my brother.

But even worse, the default storage for the metadata (on Mythbuntu
anyway) is on the system partition, and filling up your system
partition can bring disastrous consequences.  Mythbackend can not
write to the database, and if you are lucky, that will happen when the
scheduler runs and creates its temporary table, resulting in it
stopping all recordings.  If you are unlucky, it may happen during a
recording, and that could cause corruption of your database.

Have you checked how full your system partition is recently?
